Planning Your Construction Project

Accurate material estimates are the difference between a construction project that stays on budget and one that spirals into costly overruns. Ordering too little concrete means a second pour with a visible cold joint. Ordering too much lumber means wasted money sitting in a dumpster. These calculators help you get the quantities right before you place a single order.

Concrete work covers slabs, footings, piers, and post holes. A typical 2,000 sq ft home requires roughly 150-200 cubic yards of concrete for its full foundation, including footings and the slab itself. Getting the volume right depends on accurate length, width, and depth measurements — our calculators handle the conversion from cubic feet to cubic yards automatically. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the results. You can find additional measurement tools in our area and volume calculators section.

Framing lumber estimates cover wall studs, top and bottom plates, headers, jack studs, and cripple studs. Standard residential framing uses 2x4 studs at 16 inches on center for interior walls and 2x6 at 16 inches on center for exterior walls. A single 8-foot interior wall that is 12 feet long needs about 10 studs, two plates, and additional lumber for any door or window openings.

Roofing materials — shingles, underlayment, drip edge, and flashing — are measured in squares (100 sq ft each). A 1,500 sq ft roof area equals 15 squares, which translates to about 45 bundles of three-tab shingles. Factor in a 10-15% waste allowance for cuts at hips, valleys, and ridges.
